Biography of Michael Howard, freelance professional photographer

About Michael Howard

Michael Howard is a very experienced, creative, professional photographer who has been working for many years for advertising, design and publishing companies from a base in Portugal's Algarve.

From here he and his wife made trips to other countries, especially to tropical islands and Greece, either on commission or to take stock photography. Now his work has increasingly become centred on the expanding tourism industry in Portugal and the nearby provinces of Spain. This usually entails interior and exterior architectural photography for European clients promoting resorts and this has become his hallmark work. For full coverage of a hotel he can arrange models from the UK if required.

He is increasingly commissioned to produce finished images from building projects in progress for the following year's brochures. His work on seamlessly 'planting' digital gardens with more mature palm trees, 'filling' pools, populating empty terraces and removing bulldozers and cranes have made all the difference for many satisfied companies.

He tentatively went over to a digital workflow in 2002 and since then has only once been asked to use his array of film cameras as a back-up. He sums up his views on the quality of digital images: “High-end digital cameras have come a long way since my Nikon D1 of 2002. Now, as well as definition, which was never a great problem, colour balance and texture are at least equal to medium format film quality and the cameras improve each year.

His clients know that his work will be on time and technically correct for reproduction. Providing a printable, within-gamut file and following designers’ layouts are priorities. The files are either recorded to DVD or sent via his FTP site.

Michael Howard has considerable practical knowledge of printing processes and designs and publishes books on Portugal and a wide range of postcards.

His stock library sales are always Rights Managed and handled by his representatives. Links are to be found on the Contacts page.
